NOT many fathers will remember what outfit they dressed their firstborn in on the day of their arrival – but one new Plymouth dad definitely won’t ever forget.
As Eseyas Hago clothed his newborn son Rhys in his new pristine white baby-grow, he did it hoping for more than a simple “Ah” from his girlfriend Megan Griffiths, the mother of his child.
He was hoping for an emphatic ‘Yes’ as well.
The 32-year-old had gone to the effort of getting his son’s first outfit adorned with the question: “Mummy, will you marry my daddy?”.
“I have been preparing the surprise for the last six or seven months and was thinking about how best to pop the question,” he said.
“I thought I would let our new son ask her for me.”
Megan was still so dosed up with medication after her the birth that it took her a while to realise what she was being asked, explained Eseyas, and he had to prompt his new fiance to take a closer look.
“She was still quite high on the medication at the time,” said Eseyas.
“I popped it on him straight after the operation. I said to her, ‘The baby is asking you something, he is asking for me’”, he added.
The gold engagement ring he had purchased was also placed inside the cot with baby Rhys, who is the couple’s first child.
“It took me a few attempts to read the T-shirt to find out what he was trying to ask me,” said 29-year-old administrator Megan.
“I hadn’t heard of that kind of proposal being done before, it was really good. I had my suspicions that he might propose soon but I didn’t expect it would be on the day of labour.
“I’m looking forward to being a proper family now.”
The couple, who have been dating for nearly three years, currently live separately but want to start looking for their own home and start arranging their wedding as soon as Megan is ready to leave hospital.
Born on Sunday (23 November) at Derriford Hospital weighing 8lbs 2oz, tiny Rhys remains blissfully unaware of his own role in the proposal.
“For the first two days, he has been sleeping most of the time,” said new mum Megan.
“On Monday night he was a bit unsettled but he has been as good as gold most of the time.”
