Brazil football legend Pele’s condition has improved after he was moved to a special care unit in a Sao Paulo hospital, doctors say.
The 74-year-old was admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital on Monday with a urinary infection. He is being treated with antibiotics and is currently in a stable condition.
The hospital said since moving to the special care unit, Pele was showing signs of “improvement”.
“He is currently temporarily receiving renal/kidney support, but requires no further support of any kind,” a statement said.
After he was moved, Pele’s Twitter account said: “I want to take this opportunity to let you know that I am doing fine.
“I was not put into intensive care today, I was simply relocated to a special room within the hospital for privacy purposes only.
“While I appreciate all the visitors that came to see me, I really need to continue my treatment and recovery in peace.
“I am blessed to receive your love and support, and thank God this is nothing serious.
“I am looking forward to spending the upcoming holidays with my family, and will start the new year with renewed health, with many international trips already planned! Thank you!”
Pele’s spokesman Jose Fornos Rodrigues said the renowned player is “completely fine”.
“He was uncomfortable with so many people coming. It’ll be quieter now. It will take between eight and 10 days before he can leave the hospital,” he added.
The three-time World Cup champion underwent surgery at the same hospital for kidney stones on 13 November, but was released two days later.
Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele is regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all time.
During his 91-match career as an international player, Pele scored 77 goals.
He won his first World Cup at the tender age of 17, scoring twice to secure Brazil’s victory over Sweden in 1958.
